HI Tom,
I've had a problem for the last few weeks. My 5 dogs had a bout of the loose bowels about 3 weeks ago. Started feeding boiled chicken and cooked rice for 4 days and they came good, but once i started feeding beef again the runs were back, so i switched back to chicken and rice and gave the dogs a course of antibiotics from the vet to clear it up. But once on i swapped back to beef again its happened again!! I used human grade beef at $4 a kilo and I've eaten it myself and I'm fine! So back on the chicken and rice again and they've been fine, soft but firm although there seems to be a mucus in there poos. Wednesday i wormed them all out barring 1 and the 4 i wormed have had the runs terribly since. ANY Ideas? As I'm totally stuck and the vet isn't much help! as he said just keep feeding chicken and rice!!!
Thanks in advance!

Hi Johnny D,
Sorry to hear you have got these types of problems, not nice at all, I have been there and I know what you are going through.
There are unfortunately a lot of reasons for a dog to suffer diarrhoea, the most common of these is due to a bacterial infection in the gut such as Salmonella and/or Campylobacter, but this is generally cleared quickly with the right type of antibiotics.
Mucous in the stools is caused by the lining of the bowel coming away due to the inflammation in the bowel wall, and the fact that this has occurred makes me suspect that the original cause of the diarrhoea may be an infection with a protozoa such as Giardia..
I would be interested to find out what wormer was used on the four dogs that are now suffering worse symptoms, as the best treatment that I know of for a Giardia infestation is to worm the dogs with Panacur.
Cheers, Tom
