Hi Riana,
While it is possible to inject an oil based anabolic steroid safely under the skin, where it would be more in the form of an implant, I personally would not recommend it.
Firstly the absorption rate would be slower, and then there is a real possibility that unless it was placed fully under all the layers of skin, that due to the slow absorption rate some leakage and contamination could occur, resulting in a nasty sore.
With any oil based substance the deep intra-muscular injection method is certainly the safest, and therefore the recommended method.
Of course in Australia the use of any anabolic steroid for any reason, including oestrous suppression, is banned in racing greyhounds and would certainly result in a positive swab.
I should also mention that I have seen some substances that were designed to be injected intra-muscular, and having been injected subcutaneous, resulted in a patch of white hair at the injection site on a black greyhound, this unwanted side effect could be detrimental in the show greyhounds.
Cheers, Tom

Hi Riana,
Yes the effect is the same; no matter where a medical drug is injected its effect is the same. The only difference between the various routes is the speed at which the drug enters the blood stream.
If you are more comfortable injecting under the skin and the substance is listed as being able to be injected subcutaneous, it will certainly be safe to do so.
My preferred method for injecting under the skin, and to ensure that the needle is actually under the skin, is to pick up a fold of skin, hold it firmly between thumb and forefinger, and then by placing the needle close to the fingers and away from the body, push it through both layers of skin and then allow the skin at the tip of the needle to slide off the needle.
While it may look a little painful as it means two holes in the skin, I have never had a greyhound react to this method, and it is the surest way for the substance being injected to finish up where it needs to be.
Most people when they do a subcutaneous injection pick the skin up to create a little tent, and then inject into that area. Doing it that way quite often some of the injection finishes up between layers of skin creating a lump under the skin that then has to be massaged to disperse the drug.
As far as intramuscular injections are concerned it depends on the amount being injected, up to 1ml I use the chest (Pectoral) muscles, any injection larger than this is placed high on the biceps at the outer surface of the hind limb.
Cheers, Tom
