Hi tom I have 22 month old dog that broke left 4th tarsal bone at some stage during the rearing process. Apparently broke in well. Long story short he trails extremely well at sale from puppy boxes although runs off on the home turn. Have taken him to Warragul and sandown and he can’t seem to get round the corners. He goes from 2 lengths faster than his brother at sale to 6-8 slower at Warragul from puppy boxes. Have run him up the straight at Healesville. He looks uncomfortable and tracks wider the further he goes. Have had him to numerous greyhound vets along the way who have never found anything wrong. Been to numerous checkers who have only found minor things and said back was out he will be fine now, which hasn’t been the case. He has had numerous month long spells trying to sort out this problem and has come back faster at sale each time. The only remedy’s I have been give is a Pentosan course, in case the left hock is causing problems, which hasn’t worked and the latest was to tape the right metacarpals, which hasn’t been tried as yet. What are thoughts on this problem tom. Thanks rick

Hi Rick,
As you realise it’s extremely difficult, if not impossible, to diagnose a problem such as this without very carefully examining the dog.
However, there is little doubt in my mind that the dogs running manner is caused by a bone problem.
Mainly because he has been spelled sufficiently for any fractures to heal, it then comes down to the possibility that a calcification of a healed fracture is impacting on an adjoining bone and causing severe pain during running.
While unlikely as it should have been detected by now is a non union of an old fracture in a fibula.
Regardless it’s my honest opinion that it’s undiagnosed bone pain causing the problem and therefore taping wrists is not going to achieve anything.
As you are most likely aware my wife and I have spent the last eight years traveling Aus, and while currently in Berwick visiting family not far from Sale, we have to move from our current location in 48 hours, with our next stop Warrnambool. While I would be happy to examine your boy to see if I can locate the issue, the window of opportunity to do so is extremely limited.
Cheers, Tom

Hi Tom just to follow up with this problem we had X-rays done and most likely when he fractured his 4th tarsal bone there has also been a fracture where the fibula meets the hock, minimal gap between the the bone surfaces. And bone thickening. A good learning experience to back your own judgement sometimes and get X-rays done. Thanks for your help.
