Hi. My racing whippet tore her left gracilis two weeks ago. Have been giving cold to reduce swelling and have been doing some cold laser to aid healing. It appears that the muscle has dropped now most of the swelling has gone. Will this repair itself in time or should I be going something different? Thanks.

Hi Dave, Sorry mate but once the muscle has “dropped” it simply means that it has torn away from its origin, and once this has happened, other than stitching it back, there is no way that it can heal back again. In regard to surgery to repair torn muscles, this is always best done as soon as possible after the injury occurs. Mainly because the tissue tends to shrink and scar tissue forms rapidly making surgical repair much more difficult as often the edges to be stitched also need to be trimmed, shortening the muscle even more. Two weeks may be to long, but if you wanted to go that way it’s certainly worth a veterinary surgeon having a look at the injury. If it’s allowed to heal naturally, with laser treatment to speed up healing and reduce unwanted scar tissue, there is no reason why the dog would not be able to run without any severe consequences other than it will remain visible that the muscle has “dropped”. Cheers, Tom
