Hi Tom, If you under fed carbs in a dogs diet unknowingly would it show up in a blood test for example the hb or hct/ pcv Many thanks Dee Hi Dee, It’s highly unlikely that a low carbohydrates diet would affect the dogs blood count directly in the short term. However an excessively low cab diet would require the greyhound to obtain energy from other sources in the diet, which would most likely be protein. In which case there is a chance that this would increase waste products being produced and these would have to be cleared by the kidneys, and at the same time this could also limit the protein available for other metabolic processes including producing red blood cells. Taking the whole thing a step further it is conceivable that with the kidneys under stress due to an increased amount of waste to process, the production of EPO could be affected, and this would also affect the production of red blood cells. This would also increase the stress levels the dogs metabolic system would be under, depending on the workload, which in turn increases the destruction of red blood cells. While it’s a long bow to draw, yes if the carbohydrates limitation was severe enough, and went on long enough it would affect the blood count which would show in a blood test. Cheers, Tom
