Hi Tom I’ve got a nervy excitable bitch & on a race day more i have been told to get some L-Tryptophan it’s a calming for horses would this be ideal to give her if yes can you advice me on the amount to give for pre race & time to give on race day . Cheers Hi Mark & Donnie, I’m sorry to have to disappoint you, but L- tryptophan is simply an amino acid that in the body is used as a component of serotonin, and while serotonin helps to regulate mood and sleep, providing additional tryptophan does not immediately result in a sudden spike in serotonin and an immediate reduction in nervousness. So it’s not a drug that has a direct effect, but a part of the normal greyhound diet as meat is one of the foods that is naturally high in tryptophan, and because of that providing an additional dose of tryptophan pre race doesn’t really work all that well in removing or even reducing “race day” nerves. While a high dose of L- tryptophan “Calming Paste” may have an effect on some horses it most likely has to do with the horses diet and the high probability that this is low in natural occurring tryptophan. However if you wished to experiment in this regard it would be better to buy the human L-tryptophan supplement and start using that at half the adult dose in her daily diet to increase overall serotonin in the body, with an additional normal adult dose 4 hours prior to kenneling. Cheers, Tom
