Hi Donnie, There is this info about Ivomec; Worming with Ivomec And you need to keep the next post after that one in mind which states: PLEASE NOTE URGENT NOTICE If you use Ivermectin for worming your dogs, or as a monthly heart worm preventative, you MUST NOT use Comfortis an oral flea treatment within 6 weeks as the combination of the two together can cause serious neurological problems, including muscle weakness, shaking, and in some instances even death. Ivomec does NOT treat any species of tapeworm and these will need to be treated separately. I urge caution, and would never recommend the use of any type of “spot-on” treatment at the same time as worming with Ivomec as the drugs used with a lot of these types of flea treatments can still enter the blood stream and because of the combination with oral worming treatment cause severe toxicity. You have to remember that any treatments for either internal or external parasites are designed to kill those parasites and it’s always a worry that if you exceed the dosage it can cause damage to the kidneys/liver of the dog, and adding another drug to that at the same time is fraught with danger. As far as I’m concerned the absolute minimum time between using two different drugs for either flea or worm eradication is 14 days, and at times even using them that close together can have devastating results in regard to the long term health of the Greyhound. For the rest of the time the use of any drug must be used as per the provided label, and if the drug you intent to use is to be used “off label” in other words not for what is was prescribed for as per label you must check with your local vet as to the safety of using that product “off label”. The other fact that must be kept in mind at all times is that greyhounds as a species are far more susceptible to excessive toxicity compared to most other breeds of dogs due to their extremely low body fat content, and the fact that they perform strenuous exercise which affects the ability of the body to deal with toxic substances. Cheers, Tom

Donnie Hi Donnie, Because of my concern about the possibility that one of the flea treatments that you use regularly causing problems with Ivomec, and because Ivomec does not treat tape worms you would be far better to use a broad spectrum wormer such as Drontal Dog Allwormer Tablets and forget about using Ivomec. How long before a race could you use any wormer safely without it affecting the dog in a race? All wormers being strong enough to kill intestinal worms, and particularly wormers that also go into the blood stream such as Ivomec, will have a temporary toxic effect, even if extremely slight, on the health of the dog. Therefore the longest possible time you could leave between treating the dog for intestinal worms and racing is best, but as an absolute minimum three clear days. Cheers, Tom
