Hi Claire,
Muscle injuries and subsequent ultrasound treatments dramatically reduce muscle tone, so it’s always a good idea to use an EMS afterwards to improve muscle fitness.
At the same time it will also provide some indication as to how well the muscle has healed. As you know the EMS sends an electronic pulse through the muscle tissue and causes a contraction, and the normal reaction of the muscle tissue would then be to relax after each pulse. However if the muscle has not fully healed it will be slower to relax after a few contractions, and is likely to then cramp if the EMS treatment is continued.
For that reason it is always best for the first EMS treatment to be limited to around ten firm contractions, and then building up to thirty contraction over a period of four treatments.
If however the setting of the EMS is limited to soft twitches instead of firm contractions, start with a 30 second treatment and then increase this to two minutes over four treatments.
If after that you wish to further increase muscle tone or muscle size, then either use thirty firm contractions or two minute gentler treatments. Four such once daily treatments is generally enough to see a muscle fully functional.
It is also a good idea to gently massage a heat producing liniment into the muscle tissue after each EMS treatment.
Cheers, Tom
