Hi Dale,
That product can be a bit of a problem swabbing wise because the Flumethasone part of the formula is a type of prednisolone and when mixed with DMSO it is likely to cause a positive swab for five days, and the DMSO itself while not generally swabbed for still has a similar withholding time.
Therefore I would be really cautious in using this product with a greyhound that is currently racing, and would be more inclined to only use it as a treatment with those greyhounds having a short spell as a result of an injury requiring that type of treatment.
My own assessment of this product indicates it would require a seven day withholding period until proven otherwise.
The basic reason for this is that for a prednisolone injection the withholding time exceeds seven days, while with most topical applications a withholding period of 48 hours has been recommended, and while this is a topical application the fact that it is mixed with DMSO makes it behave much more like the injected product.
The other thing to be careful of is that because one of the active ingredients is a type of prednisolone it should be handled with care and impervious gloves worn, particularly for females applying this product to their greyhounds, because while it would take prolonged exposure, prednisolone has been associated with prolapse and abortion in humans.
Cheers, Tom
